LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A niece of Mitt Romney has been picked to lead the Michigan Republican Party.
Ronna Romney McDaniel was elected Saturday by delegates attending the party's convention in Lansing. Bobby Schostak didn't seek another two-year term after four years as chairman.
The 41-year-old McDaniel lives in Northville. In her victory speech, she criticized the "liberal" policies of President Barack Obama and reached out to delegates who didn't vote for her.
The other candidates for party chair were Norm Hughes, who worked for President Ronald Reagan, and Kim Shmina, a nurse.
Republicans had a successful fall election and hope to deliver Michigan to the GOP candidate in the 2016 presidential race for the first time since 1988. Obama defeated Michigan native Mitt Romney and picked up the state's electoral votes in 2012.
