Equality House Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary With 'Plant One For Peace' We can't believe it, but The Equality House turned two years old this month!
The Equality House is a structure that sits in direct opposition to the Westboro Baptist Church compound in Topeka, Kansas, and which has spent the last 24 months raising visibility (and often funds) for queer equality. The Equality House and its organizers celebrated the two year anniversary in an amazing way over the weekend by launching "Plant one for Peace," a direct action that brought together all kinds of people to kiss in front of the Westboro Baptist Church.
"We did this to remind the world what we stand for at the Equality House: individuals celebrating and taking pride in who they are, and never being afraid to show acts of love, even in the face of bigotry," Planting Peace President Aaron Jackson told The Huffington Post.
We're happy to report all kinds of people -- queer couples, straight couples and families -- showed up to participate and ex-members of the WBC even dropped by including Libby Phelps who, organizers told The Huffington Post, was in the crowd with her husband kissing her baby.
The Equality House is an initiative spearheaded by the non-profit group Planting Peace that seeks to challenge the radical and homophobic rhetoric of the Westboro Baptist Church and support queer individuals. In the past, the house, which was originally painted the colors of the rainbow flag in March 2013, has played host to a child's lemonade stand for peace, a gay wedding and a drag show -- all essentially on the anti-gay church's front lawn.
