Kenyth Mogan, LGBT Singer, Releases 'Unlock Your Heart' (VIDEO) Can the tin man learn to unlock his heart?
Out musician Kenyth Mogan just released the video for his new track "Unlock Your Heart," which embodies a "Wizard of Oz" theme and co-stars model Ronnie Kroell.
The Huffington Post chatted with Mogan this week about "Unlock Your Heart" and his inspiration for the video.
The Huffington Post: What inspired the music video?
Kenyth Mogan: The idea for the music video came from Jeremy Sonney, who ended up co-directing it with Robb Padgett from KATR Pictures. Initially, I had my heart set on a video based on the classic TV show "Bewitched," but Jeremy didn't think it fit and came to me with the a theme built around "The Wizard of Oz." I have always loved the film and read all of the books multiple times, so I jumped at the chance to put my own spin on something so iconic.
How did Ronnie Kroell get involved?
I approached Ronnie on Facebook. I basically said, “Hey, I like your stuff! Wanna be in a music video?" A few days later we sat down for coffee, and I explained the concept and played him the song. To my happy surprise he loved it and immediately signed on -- and I'm incredibly grateful that he did, because I can't imagine the video without him.
What do you want viewers to take away from the music video?
Obviously, a magical chainsaw can only work in the Land of Oz, but I really do hope that what people take away from the video is that love’s not easy, for anyone, but it’s always possible -- if you open up your heart to it.
What’s it like being a queer artist?
I came out at the age of fifteen in north-eastern Montana, where being gay was barely recognized as a concept, let alone a life to lead. While I did face a lot of initial adversity (much of it from my own family) I also received a lot of support from many unexpected places. My experience isn't particularly unique -- people all over the country face the same challenges every day. I want to be the artist who the little gay kid facing those challenges can look to and think, “Hey, he did it. So can I!”
